perfection, not so perfect?
so i came to a realization. it's pretty much a platitude. i know this. you don't have to tell me. AND, i came to this realization while reading US Weekly (shut up, you know you do too. or, you read Gawker, Vanity Fair, USA Today's Pop Candy ... it's all the same...)
but my realization is that we don't like perfection. maybe we're scared of it. maybe the ideal of perfection is not so perfect. i'm not sure what it is. but think about it? Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt = "perfect". Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson = "perfect". Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong, Tom Cruise, Nicole Richie trying to be skinny. It all sounds "perfect", doesn't it?
i was in one of those "perfect" relationships. my parents loved him. my friends loved him (more than me). he was smart, handsome and on the road to success. he was *the nicest* guy around. most importantly, he put me (the fuckhead) on a pedestal. He gave me everything I wanted (hours of tickling my feet....daily...). But, it scared the living shit out of me (do you know what its like to have someone love you down to your bone?). i felt unworthy. i felt suffocated. it was like having someone tell me everyday that I didn't deserve my life.
plus, i felt like i was missing out on things that I needed. I was like Brad Pitt; I needed motorcycles and exotic babies. i needed someone who understood why i wanted to go to the PLISF auction even if i didn't have many law school friends. I needed someone who would wake up in the middle of the night to answer my phone calls but also help me (order me to) go to sleep by 2 am so I can get enough sleep before a long day of work and school.
why does society pressure us to pursue its version of perfection? ew.
