Putting Myself in Another's Tights . . . er, Shoes

Last week, I had to buy stockings because I realized that the ones that I was wearing had a tiny tear in them (damn freddi for chewing on 'em!! kidding, she is allowed to do as much damage as she wants within a reasonable price range). I went to a drug store on campus.

To my dismay, the store only had stockings for dark skin tones. And, the only stockings that I may have been able to wear were only in large sizes. I was so upset!

I started thinking about this article that I read two years ago in Bitch Magazine about the difficulty for black women to find beauty products in their skin tone...and the whole "conventional beauty standards" phenomena. It's unfair and unfortunate and now I got a taste of white-culture's medicine.

Plus, I think carrying products suited for "your clientele" should only go far. It seems strange to me that there are stores that mostly carry only black pantyhose and stores that carry mostly white pantyhose. Especially because thes store was a plain ol' chain drug stores not a self-proclaimed specialty beauty products store.
